Opportunity

Five Star®, is the leader of traditional student notetaking reaching students of all ages. (Owning 43.9% market share during Back-To-School 2023 in the spiral bound notebook category) Traditional notetaking methods are evolving into more customizable systems. Older, college age students specifically are starting to look for more sophisticated notetaking tools to better suit their flexible needs. However, there are currently no flexible options in the back to school shopping setup to help support this trend.

Happy Planner

Current market only has 2 product lines which offer a similar solution. Happy planner and TUL Notetaking system

Both of these products use a binding method called “The Disc System” Each book has at least 10 individual plastic molded “Discs” which hold special cut paper in place making it easy to remove and replace individual pieces of paper within the book. Our challenge is to create a notebook with the same removable paper functionality, without using the disc system.
